Check out how old fashion Canadian pond hockey is played. Could it possibly be on a more scenic rink?
Pond hockey rules differ from the hockey you might be used to watching on television. It’s a fast-paced, offensively played game that’s meant to capture the true spirit of the sport. Each team has only 4 players. There are no goal tenders and no calls are made for icing or being off side. It’s a lot of fun to watch.
The players have a good sense of humor. In true Canadian style one group had their jerseys made out of a red plaid material like a lumberjack coat. An entire team dressed as Jaromir Jagr by wearing long haired wigs and jerseys with the number 68 on them , and another group was named the Chiefs, like in the movie Slapshot.
The third annual Lake Louise Pond Hockey Classic in Banff National Park was held on February 25th and 26th. This year there were a total of 29 teams competing for the Championship title.
All the action is held on six rinks that have been created on the frozen waters of Lake Louise. Games take place all day Saturday and on Sunday morning, and the final play off game commencing in the afternoon. More information can be found here: Lake Louise Pond Hockey
The event makes for the perfect opportunity for a weekend stay over in the area. There are plenty of family activities to participate in. Bring your skates or rent them upon arrival to try out ice skating on Lake Louise or take an old fashion horse drawn sleigh ride.
The Alpine Social at The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise hosts the Molson Canadian Hockey House throughout the weekend. They serve tasty pub style food while live entertainment performs. This year it was a two piece band called the “Swillbillies.” For a quick bite to eat there is the Hockey Hut located at the hotels lower lakeside entrance. It serves chili, soup, deli sandwiches and drinks.
